Winter at Stout's

For the first time ever, Stout’s Island Lodge is offering weekly (or longer) cabin-only winter rentals.

The Island is truly a winter wonderland that is ready for you and yours to enjoy. Based on demand, the cabins will be rented in the following order as they fill up beginning Friday, January 15th, 2021.

  • Shore Lodge – fully-occupied for the winter
  • Clara’s Cabin – select weeks available
  • Katherine’s Cabin
  • Douglas Cabin

The season is expected to end Friday, March 12th but may be extended if the ice conditions allow.

Each of the cabins have full kitchens. Food service in the Main Lodge will not be open this season, but is planned to be open next winter, along with its upgraded suites. The Great Room will be open beginning February 1st (no restrooms) if you need better internet service than through your cell service in your cabin.

This has been a hard time for everyone. You and your family deserve a real escape.

Winter Activities

Winter at the Island is a perfect time to enjoy the solitude of Western Wisconsin. The peace and quiet of the Island cannot be overstated.

While most of the activities that you can partake in at the Island will be enjoyed in your very own private cabin, there are still some amenities that can be enjoyed on the lake, and elsewhere around the property.

Hiking, Snowshoeing, and Skiing

The main island has a path all around its perimeter, plus the entire lake is at your disposable! The east island also has paths with a picnic cabin at the far north end. Looking for something a little more challenging? It’s the great North Woods! And we’re home to a segment of the Ice Age Trail (1000 miles of trail all in the beautiful state of Wisconsin) so there’s plenty of walking, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing to be found. See "trails and rivers" for more details.

Ice Fishing

Red Cedar Lake is located in Barron County, Wisconsin. This lake is 1,841 acres in size. It is 53.00 feet deep at its deepest point. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Bluegill, Large and Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Panfish and Walleye. Guests must bring all of their own ice fishing equipment and must have the proper permit(s) to fish in Wisconsin.

Open-water Fishing at the Boathouse

Fishing can be enjoyed year-round at our historic boathouse. Fishing poles and bait can be found near the boat house. We do not provide fishing licenses, but you can purchase them from nearby stores such as Mikana General Store and Seasonal Power Toys, located just a few miles from our parking lot.

Sledding Hill

There are a couple of fun sledding hills at the Island for the young ones in your group.

We provide the wood, you provide the s'mores!

If you’re in a meditative mood, walk the labyrinth located on the south side of the island between the water sport area and the firepit. Please remember that this is a peaceful endeavor and keep your volume respectful when enjoying or when others are enjoying.

Down Hill Skiing

There is downhill skiing under 20 miles away at Christie Mountain (must bring your own equipment).

Indoor Activities

We invite you to use your imagination.

A variety of board games for all ages are stocked in your room.

You will find that our Great Room has a modest library from which you are welcome to borrow books at your leisure.

Each cabin has a TV for your enjoyment.

Commonly Asked Questions

When is check in?

Checkin time is 4:00pm and checkout is 11:00am on Fridays.

How do I get to the island?

There is a plowed path from the Stout’s Island Lodge boat landing. It is now safe to drive to the parking lot on the Island (the owners do it!). Another option – in addition to a relatively short walk – is our golf carts and enclosed John Deere Gator. In special circumstances access is available by air boat in ALL ice conditions.

Is the dining room open?

Our dining room is not open during the winter.

Are there grocery stores nearby?

Yes – in Rice Lake, along with restaurants and shopping.

Is there internet on the island?

Guest rooms do not have Wi-Fi; however, cell reception is quite good for most carriers. The Great Room with stronger Wi-Fi will open February 1st (no bathrooms will be available).

Can I bring my pet?

Yes – one dog (or two cats) with an extra $250 pet fee to cover extra cleaning and other costs.

Can I put a roll-a-way bed or air mattress in the room?

Yes, of course, but should not be needed because the number of beds determines maximum cabin occupancy in most cases.

Do you have wood for the wood-burning fireplaces in our room?

Yes, there is a wood pile right next to the cabin.

Can I bring my own snowmobile?

Yes, there are lots of trails in the area to explore. You may drive your snowmobile to the island, but it must stay in the parking area. No machines are allowed on the island.
